Pittsburgh and the Fort Pitt Bridge
Pittsburgh is famously known as “The City of Bridges” — home to more bridges than any other city in the world. Once a steel-making powerhouse, modern Pittsburgh blends its blue-collar roots with cutting-edge tech, healthcare, and education industries. Its skyline rises above a network of hills, rivers, and tunnels, creating one of the most distinctive urban landscapes in the United States. Our NxNW crew just returned from exploring the city. We had a great time, even though the light was not the greatest; you have to take what you can get.
One of the most iconic structures in that landscape is the Fort Pitt Bridge. Completed in 1959, the double-decked steel bowstring arch bridge spans the Monongahela River, connecting downtown Pittsburgh to the Fort Pitt Tunnel and the city’s western suburbs. What makes the Fort Pitt Bridge especially memorable is the breathtaking view it offers when emerging from the tunnel into downtown—suddenly revealing the entire city skyline in a dramatic visual “reveal” that has wowed countless drivers and visitors. It’s a gateway both literally and symbolically, linking the city’s past with its modern pulse. Whether lit up at night or framed by fall foliage, the Fort Pitt Bridge remains a true Pittsburgh landmark.
