Two Guns, Arizona, is a historic ghost town along Interstate 40, about 30 miles east of Flagstaff. It’s rich in Wild West history, Native American culture, and 20th-century Route 66 roadside attractions. The area was originally inhabited by the Apache and Navajo. A tragic event known as the Apache Death Cave occurred here in the 1870s, where a group of Apaches were killed by Navajos after hiding in a cave. This site is still part of the town’s lore.
In the early 1900s, a settler named Henry “Two Gun” Miller built a trading post and zoo. Two Guns thrived during the heyday of Route 66, he also capitalized on the site of the Death Cave by turning it into a tourist attraction. The town’s fortunes declined after Miller’s death, and when Interstate 40 bypassed it in the 1970s. Businesses closed, and the area fell into ruin.
These old places along Route 66 are slowly decaying away as the years pass. Two Guns is a shell of its old self, but some of the skeletons are still left to explore and photograph.
