Tucked into the lush forest beside Glade Creek in Babcock State Park, the Glade Creek Grist Mill is one of the most iconic and photogenic landmarks in West Virginia’s Appalachian landscape. Though it looks like a relic from the 19th century, this charming water-powered mill was actually completed in 1976 as a faithful re-creation of the original Cooper’s Mill that once stood nearby before the park was established. Built by combining parts salvaged from three older West Virginia grist mills — including structural timbers from a 1890 mill and a massive overshot water wheel rescued from another — the mill is a living monument to the more than 500 water-powered mills that once dotted the state.
