Saints Peter and Paul Church is located in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Most of the surrounding areas have been renovated with new apartment buildings and businesses, but this old relic still stands as far as I know. Following World War II, church attendance mirrored Pittsburgh’s population’s slow and steady decline. The flight of families to the suburbs combined with the collapse of Pittsburgh’s steel industry in the 1970s left only a remnant of elderly parishioners who could no longer support the massive structure. In July 1992, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced Sts. Peter and Paul’s closure. It’s often referred to as the “Dogma Church” as the church was used in the climatic scene of the 1999 movie.
I have explored this church several times over the last few years, this is an older photo from one of my trips.
