St. Raymond’s Church in Amboy, California, is a poignant relic of the town’s mid-20th-century heyday along historic Route 66. Dedicated on March 8, 1951, the church was constructed to serve approximately 40 Catholic families, many of whom were employed by the railroad or local salt mines. Initially named St. Bridget’s in 1950, it was renamed St. Raymond the following year. The church, designed to seat about 100 congregants, was built on land donated by Roy Crowl, the proprietor of Roy’s Motel and Café. Financial assistance for its construction came from the Catholic Extension Society in Chicago. Today, St. Raymond’s Church stands as a testament to Amboy’s vibrant past, offering visitors a glimpse into the town’s historical and spiritual heritage.

This church was a popular subject as our crew wandered around Amboy on our stop right before sunset.
