The Port of San Francisco is a major seaport on the United States’ western edge, along the San Francisco Bay in California. It spans approximately 7.5 miles (12 km) of waterfront, stretching from Hyde Street Pier in the north to India Basin in the south. The San Francisco Port Commission, a department of the City and County of San Francisco, manages the port. Originally a hub for the California Gold Rush (1849), the port played a critical role in the development of San Francisco. It has historically served as a center for maritime trade, fishing, and passenger transportation.
