These two specimens were on display at the Hackberry General Store in Hackberry, Arizona, a DeSoto Firedome and a Chrysler New Yorker. Old classics that used to travel Route 66 back in the day.
The Hackberry General Store was built in 1934, and has survived periods when it was abandoned. It was originally operated by the famed Route 66 artist Bob Waldmire, who traveled the road in his orange 1972 Volkswagen Microbus. Given Waldmire’s roots (his father ran the Cozy Dog Drive In on Route 66 in Springfield, Illinois), he preserved the store in its ramshackle state.
The store has been through several owners since its construction, but each new owner has agreed to preserve its old charm and Route 66 charisma, which is on full display at this stop along America’s Highway. Visitors, many from countries other than the U.S., crowd into the store to experience the Mother Road, and tack their paper money, stickers and patches to the walls.
Thanks for stopping
