Perched high in the mountains near Cresson, SCI Cresson carried an atmosphere that blended isolation, history, and decay long before its closure. Originally built on the grounds of a former tuberculosis sanatorium, the sprawling complex felt heavy with layers of Pennsylvania history, its aging brick buildings and fenced corridors surrounded by rolling Appalachian scenery that stood in sharp contrast to the institution itself. Exploring the property with a camera offered a strangely powerful experience — long empty hallways, weathered concrete, rusting infrastructure, and fading institutional details created scenes that felt frozen in time. Light spilling through broken windows and abandoned rooms added an almost cinematic mood, while the silence of the mountain setting gave the grounds an unsettling but fascinating character. For photographers drawn to urban decay and forgotten places, the site offered endless textures, atmosphere, and emotional weight, where every image seemed to capture both the passage of time and the stories left behind.
It’s fun to explore the past,
Thanks for stopping
