Hoppy Monday – Sierra Nevada Brewing, Mills River N.C.
Thanks to Winter Storm Pandora the Empress and I were stranded in Asheville N.C. An extra night, there was ice and snow from just north of Asheville to Ohio. Let me tell ya, Asheville is not a bad place to be stuck, with 18 craft breweries located in Asheville the city is quickly becoming the craft-brewing center of the Southeast. The newest facility is Sierra Nevada’s $108 million dollar state of the art facility. We were lucky enough to show up and grab the last two tour openings for the day, they are booked over a month in advance so we lucked out when a couple of spots were open for the noon tour.
The facility is amazing, to say the least and the tour was awesome. The facility itself is not quite finished, the brewery is operational and the gift shop is open as well. Later this month the tasting room, restaurant and live music venue will be finished. The tasting room will have another brewing system for special brews only available in Mills River. If your ever in the area it’s worth a visit.
The main Brewhouse and allot of the building itself is adorned in copper. The brew kettles are actually state of the art Stainless Steel but owner Ken Grossman has a thing for copper, so he bought out a German Brewery and used the old historic copper kettles as the outer casing for the new brew kettles in Mills River. Makes for a gorgeous Brew House.
The tour starts and ends with great taste, a nice Sierra Nevada Pale ale to start, and to end the tour a tasting of the rest of the line, Torpedo, Bigfoot, Ovila, Beer Camp Hoppy Lager, Hop Hunter IPA, Kellerweis, and Porter. I think I got them all! An hour and a half tour, great beer and a great place for sure. Thanks winter storm Pandora and Sierra Nevada!
The Hop room was really cool, I think there were around 8-12 huge wooden bins with a different hop in each bin, 250 lb bricks of hops, so walking into this room was an aromatic pleasure if you like hops, they need to make air fresheners with this scent.
If you like craft beer, this area is becoming a major player, New Belgium Brewing has also broken ground for a $140 Million dollar Brewing Complex in Asheville, a great town, great food and a great art’s district as well, Oh and your a hop skip and jump to get on the Blue Ridge Parkway, with some of the greatest scenery around.
Thanks for looking and have a great Monday!
