St Mary’s Mercy Hospital-Gary Indiana
In the middle of Gary Indiana sits St Mary’s Mercy Hospital. Originally established in 1908, St. Mary’s Mercy Hospital would see multiple additions and renovations over the years while it expanded to accommodate the city’s growing number of residents. But when the fortunes of Gary turned and the citizens fled, the hospital could not financially support operations.
The debt-ridden facility endured a slow and painful contraction before finally closing in 1995. The city’s police department moved into the newest wing of the hospital and they put a brick wall between the old structure separating the buildings–but half of the complex (and it is huge) was never re-appropriated and left vacant. This made getting into the Hospital a bit of a challenge but we did get in and explored all the floors, this is a shot from one of the rooms.
