Stein am Rhein is one of the most picturesque small towns in Switzerland. Sitting where the Rhine flows out of Lake Constance, it feels like a medieval town that has been remarkably preserved rather than rebuilt. Its compact old town is famous for elaborately painted buildings, cobblestone streets, colorful facades, and historic squares.

What makes Stein am Rhein especially memorable is that many of the buildings are covered with large Renaissance frescoes. Walking through the main square, Rathausplatz, feels like strolling through an open-air art gallery, with scenes from mythology, history, and everyday life painted across entire building fronts. Historically, the town prospered because it sat at a strategic crossing of river and trade routes. What began as a small fishing settlement grew into a wealthy trading center during the Middle Ages, and much of that prosperity is still visible in the ornate architecture.
