Driving across the desert and spotting the skeleton of Fort Courage or the old trading-post site can feel eerie. But that emptiness also whispers a story: of travelers and settlers, of shifting roads and shifting dreams, of boom and bust, and of the relentlessness of change. Houck may no longer be a bustling stop on a highway, but it remains as a living reminder — a place where history lies layered in sand, wood, rusted metal, and memory. It challenges us to think about what we build, what we value, and what happens when the roads change.

Unfortunately, this was razed this week, so Fort Courage is only a memory now.

Thanks for stopping.
